David O’Brian brings a unique combination of clinical expertise, academic achievement, and a hands-on approach to patient care. With qualifications in both Exercise Physiology and Physiotherapy, Dave has worked across some of Sydney’s leading hospitals, including Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH), where he continues to practice as an Advanced Practice Physiotherapist in the Emergency Department. In this role, Dave manages acute injuries, interprets scans, and collaborates with orthopaedic specialists to determine the best treatment pathways for patients.

Dave’s career spans both public and private healthcare, with extensive experience working alongside orthopaedic surgeons to support patients through postoperative rehabilitation. He also brings a strong evidence-based approach to his practice, having contributed to large-scale NHMRC research projects focused on breast cancer rehabilitation and support for adults with intellectual disabilities. His current PhD research at RMIT focuses on improving rehabilitation outcomes after shoulder orthopaedic surgery, making him an industry leader in shoulder rehabilitation.

In addition to his clinical work, Dave has a passion for teaching and has taught exercise science at the University of Sydney and ACPE, sharing his wealth of knowledge with the next generation of health professionals.

Beyond the clinic

Dave tries to live life to the fullest outside of his physiotherapy career. He’s lived in Germany while completing his Master’s research, lived and worked in Thailand as a divemaster, and spent time in Northern NSW, where he worked at Lismore Base Hospital.

When he’s not working or studying, Dave is committed to staying active, enjoying tennis, rugby, surfing, and scuba diving. He’s also a keen musician, playing guitar, drums, and piano whenever he finds a spare moment between his PhD studies and his clinical work.

With his broad clinical expertise, academic focus, and down-to-earth approach, Dave is passionate about helping patients achieve their best outcomes, whether that’s recovering from surgery, managing chronic conditions, or returning to the activities they love.
